Avian Blood Test Results

Here are the normal results/values for avian blood test results.
AST (SGOT)    140-360 IU/L
AST (Aspartate Aminotransferase)--Liver values/ liver enzymes--if the numbers are greater than 350, indicative of liver disease.

WBC   5,000-11,000
White Blood Count -- A high WBC is usually indicative of avian disease.  Stress in birds can elevate the WBC and juvenile birds (6-8 months or younger) can also have an elevated WBC.   Low WBC ususally indicates some type of viral infection, particularly Beak & Feather Disease.
There are five types of white blood cells:  neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, lymphocytes, monocytes

CPK (CP)  147-418 IU/L
CPK/CP (creatine kinase) - Run with the AST, rules out muscle damage/wasting (not a test beneficial in diagnosing chronic or end stage liver disease, values will be low or decreased due to loss of hepatocytes) *hepatocytes are cells found in the liver*
Most elevations of CP are because of muscle damage like injury, rough handling & trauma.

LDH   208-414 IU/L
LDH (Lactate Dehydrogenase) - Found in muscle, liver, kidney and red blood cells---elevated values are indicative of liver disease----however, these levels rise and fall more quickly than AST levels in birds with this condition. The differences provide how chronicity of liver disease. If values are increased and CPK levels are normal, liver disease is usually indicated.

Total Protein    3-5 g/dL
Total Protein (albumin and globulins)--Low levels may indicate malnutrition, malabsorption, chronic disease, renal disease, liver disease, parasites, stress, etc.

Cholesterol   100-300 mg/dL
Cholesterol----normal cholesterol levels in birds have not been well documented, but normal seems to fall inbetween 100-300mg/dl. Elevated levels can be seen in birds on a high fat diet, obese birds, or birds with hypothyroidism. Low levels can be seen in birds with liver or kidney disease.

Glucose   200-400 mg/dL
Glucose-- Avian glucose levels are higher than dog or cat levels and can be higher with stress also.  Diabetic birds usually have a glucose level of over 700mg/dl.  Levels below 150mg/dl should be considered life threatening.

Calcium  8-12 mg/dL
Calcium-- Low levels of calcium are frequently seen as the cause of seizures in birds.....elevated levels are seen in ovulating birds.

Uric Acid  2-11 mg/dL
Uric Acid--primary waste product of the kidney. The most consistent lab abnormality in avian renal disease is persistently elevated uric acid levels.

HCT  40.2-55.12 %
HCT (Hematocrit) -- Hematocrit is the percent of whole blood that is composed of red blood cells. The hematocrit is a measure of both the number of red blood cells and the size of red blood cells.

Bile Acid  Less than 100 umol/L
Bile Acid - Good liver function test.  Values greater than 150-200 umol/L indicate liver dysfunction  Samples are usually taken after the bird has fasted.

Heterophils 46-72 %

Lymphocytes 20-50 %

Basophil   0-1 %
