From personal observation it is apparent that Macaws and Conures do not do as well as Cockatoos and Cockatiels when fed on some of the lower fat diets. We have seen many Cockatoos and Cockatiels grow beautifully on diets that range between 3% and 5% fat content. Macaws and Conures raised on these fat levels are too slim. Requirements of fat for Macaws and Conures are better maintained somewhere between 10-15%.

3.14 Chlorophyll
The one ingredient that is always present in parent-fed wild diets is chlorophyll. The health benefits of this nutrient are well documented in many animal diets but most hand-feeding formulas do not contain chlorophyll and would be improved by its addition.
A few years ago, spinach became a popular additive to many formulas but rumors that it might block the absorption of calcium ended its popularity. We have been using wheat grass powder for a few years and can recommend it highly as a supplemental additive to any hand-feeding formula. Wheat grass is not only high in Chlorophyll and Beta Carotene but contains a multitude of other trace nutrients as well. A noticeable difference in the overall plumage coloration was seen with the use of this product. The reds will be especially brilliant. Consultation with nutrition-ists has revealed that this is probably caused by the high beta carotene content of the powder. However, simply supplementing the beta carotene content of a formula will not produce these brilliant red feathers. The use of wheat grass powder, spirilina, or other products rich in chlorophyll is highly advocated and we believe no formula should be without it.作者: louisa20047 時間: 2013-7-4 00:51
